If you are worried that installing solar panels on your house will result in time-consuming, costly and complex maintenance, you can breathe a sigh of relief.  Most solar panels used in residential systems are built of solar cells encased in thick glass, affixed to metal framework.   As they have no moving components, once they are in place they require very little maintenance.

The Real DIY System Is To Construct Your Own Solar Panels

Now, this may depend on where you live, what kinds of weather are typical for your area and whether or not your yard has a lot of trees.  For example, if you live in an area that experiences a lot of snow, you may need to take some time to clear off the solar panels following a heavy snowstorm.  Or if you reside in an area that has regular dust storms, or in an urban area where there is a lot of dirt in the air, you may need to clean off the glass panels periodically to ensure their effectiveness.    But if there is a sufficient amount of rain, that should keep the solar panels clean enough to function properly.

If there are a lot of deciduous trees in your yard that shed their leaves each fall, it may be necessary to ensure that the leaves don’t cover up the solar panels.  Even some evergreens drop their needles and may require a periodic clean up.  But a quick sweep of the broom should do the trick.

What If You Could Cheaply Make Your Own Solar Energy Panels!

Of course, the system consists of more than just the solar panels.  If you have an off grid system, it will also have storage batteries and perhaps a back up generator.   As these parts require more monitoring and regular maintenance than the actual solar panels, it’s a good idea to schedule periodic inspections so you can maintain your solar energy system at full efficiency.

If your solar panels are connected to the local power company, you will still have an inverter for your system.  An inverter takes the electricity generated by the solar panels and changes it to alternating current for your appliances.  The inverter has no mechanical parts but is an integral component of the system and should be monitored.
